Veteran Fuji artist, K1 De Ultimate, has opened up on his role in formally structuring the Fuji music genre, revealing he went beyond the stage to institutionalize it. In an exclusive interview, the music icon disclosed that he not only registered the genre officially but also penned its constitution to give Fuji a solid foundation.
According to K1, his actions were never about taking ownership of Fuji music, but rather about creating an organized system for its growth. “What I did was formalization, not hijacking,” he stated. He noted that discussions to draft the constitution took place in his home, bringing key voices in the genre together under one purpose.
K1 further explained that the genre was registered under the name "Fuji Music" with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). This led to the creation of the Fuji Musicians Association of Nigeria an official body aimed at protecting the rights and interests of Fuji artists across the country.
He said the step was crucial to safeguarding the heritage of Fuji and providing a legacy structure that would guide upcoming musicians for generations to come. “There was a need for Fuji to have its own identity, not just as a sound, but as an institution,” K1 emphasized.
Despite facing some criticism over the move, the veteran artist stood firm on his decision, highlighting that every music genre requires structure to thrive, especially traditional ones that are at risk of being overshadowed.
K1 De Ultimate’s contributions are widely seen as transformative, evolving Fuji from a purely street-based sound into a globally recognized musical expression. His work continues to inspire a new generation of Fuji artists, reinforcing his place as a cultural trailblazer in Nigeria’s music history.
