Grammy award-winning artist Burna Boy has opened up about the earnings artists make from streaming platforms, revealing the payouts for 1 million streams. In a recent Instagram post, Burna Boy shared the figures artists can expect to receive for hitting the 1 million stream milestone across various markets.
The “Party” singer estimates that Nigerian artists earn between $300 and $400 for 1 million streams on local streaming platforms. However, the payouts increase significantly in international markets. In the UK, for example, artists can earn between £3,000 and £4,000 for the same number of streams. The United States and European markets also offer comparable payouts, ranging from $3,000 to $4,000.
Burna Boy’s revelation highlights the disparity in earnings based on location, pointing out that the streaming market in Nigeria doesn’t offer the same financial reward as international markets. He further emphasizes that reaching the number one spot on Nigerian streaming platforms should not be seen as a significant achievement for artists. According to Burna Boy, the real financial rewards and recognition come from global markets, where the streaming industry offers greater value for artists.
In his post, he writes, “Your song being number one on any streaming platform in Nigeria is nothing to celebrate. I’m higher or do business on the other side.” He also shared his personal perspective, asserting that the UK, US, and European markets offer more lucrative opportunities for artists in terms of both financial returns and career growth.
This statement from Burna Boy sheds light on the challenges Nigerian artists face in the local streaming ecosystem and the importance of reaching international audiences for meaningful success and income in the music industry.
