Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has vehemently rejected her six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate, labeling it "illegal." As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, Akpoti-Uduaghan maintains that she remains a legitimate senator, duly elected to serve her constituents and the country.
The suspension, handed down by the Senate, stems from Akpoti-Uduaghan's allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This development follows a turbulent period in the Senate, marked by disagreements over seating arrangements and Akpoti-Uduaghan's outspoken stance on various issues.
In a statement made on Thursday, Akpoti-Uduaghan described her suspension as a blatant disregard for the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity. She emphasized that her suspension is a result of her refusal to be silenced and intimidated, and that she will continue to serve her constituents and the country despite the suspension.
Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension comes with several penalties, including the withdrawal of her salary and benefits, a ban from the National Assembly premises, the lockdown of her Senate office, and the withdrawal of her security details.
The Senate has stated that her suspension can be lifted or reduced if she submits a written apology. However, Akpoti-Uduaghan remains defiant, insisting that she will not apologize for speaking out against injustice.
