Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has taken disciplinary action against 37 students, suspending them for one academic year. The students' alleged offenses included "criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, and cyber-stalking," according to university documents.
The controversy began when the students created a WhatsApp group to protest the university's decision to introduce a third semester. The university's Senate subsequently approved the suspensions at its 123rd Regular Meeting on October 31, 2024.
In a letter, the Registrar Dr. Bala I. Ahmed instructed the suspended students to vacate the campus unless authorized to stay back, and only return in the 2025/2026 academic session, accompanied by their guardians and a letter of good conduct, Sahara Reporters reports.
The university's decision has ignited a heated debate among students, faculty, and the wider community. While some argue that the punishment is too severe, others believe it is necessary to maintain order and discipline on campus.
