Truphena Muthoni, a 21-year-old environmentalist, has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest tree hug at Michuki Park in Nairobi on February 1, 2025.
Her remarkable feat has received widespread recognition, including commendation from Ababu Namwamba, the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Namwamba applauded Muthoni for her persistence, not only in achieving the record but also for her dedication to environmental conservation.
In a statement on his X page, Namwamba expressed admiration for Muthoni’s accomplishment, highlighting its global significance. He emphasized how her record-setting effort demonstrates the influence of young people in advocating for climate action, sustainability, and the mental health benefits of nature.
Namwamba, who previously served as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, noted that Muthoni’s success would inspire more young people, particularly from Generation Z, to engage in environmental conservation. He encouraged young Kenyans to follow her example by promoting climate change awareness, tree planting, and mental health initiatives.
Muthoni’s achievement has drawn comparisons to the late Wangari Maathai, Kenya’s celebrated environmental activist. Her actions underscore the important role individuals can play in creating a healthier and more sustainable planet for future generations.
