US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order directing federal prisons to transfer transgender women inmates to men's facilities and halt medical treatments related to gender transition. This move is part of a broader effort to limit government recognition of an individual's gender to their sex at birth.
The directive applies to both federal prisoners and immigration detainees, and is a significant expansion of Trump's previous restrictions on housing and healthcare for transgender prisoners. The Women's Liberation Front, a group that advocates for single-sex prisons, has hailed the move as a "major victory."
However, advocates for transgender people and inmates have strongly criticized the order, arguing that it will put transgender women in danger. Shannon Minter, legal director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, warned that the policy will lead to "rapes and physical assaults" and is "terrible for prison officials" who will be forced to implement it.
Legal experts have also noted that the order is vulnerable to challenges in the courts, as federal courts have established that prison systems have a responsibility to protect vulnerable prisoners and provide medical care such as hormone therapies to those diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
The order is a significant setback for transgender rights and is part of a broader pattern of anti-transgender policies implemented by the Trump administration. It also raises concerns about the safety and well-being of transgender women in federal custody.
