Afrobeats singer Spyro has opened up about the challenges of being openly Christian in the Nigerian music industry. During a recent chat with Echo Room, Spyro recounted a conversation with R&B singer-turned-pastor Banky W, who warned him about the difficulties of publicly proclaiming faith in Christ.
Spyro revealed that Banky W shared how his career faced setbacks after he openly embraced his faith.
"Banky W told me that his problem in the industry started the moment he proclaimed Christ," Spyro said. "He told me to be sure that I am ready for this. When he was a 'bad boy,' everything was going well, but immediately he decided to do it in a godly way, war started."
Spyro admitted that adopting his "Jesus boy" brand has led to discrimination and lack of support within the industry.
"My biggest challenge in the music industry right now is discrimination," he explained. "I’ve received the biggest criticisms for coming out as a 'Jesus boy.' Media moguls rarely support or post me when I drop songs. It feels like the whole system is designed to pull you down once you declare Christ publicly."
Despite these challenges, Spyro remains steadfast in his faith, acknowledging the sacrifices that come with his decision to represent Christ in his career. His candid revelation has sparked discussions about faith and its impact on the Nigerian entertainment industry.
