Controversial Nigerian rapper, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has filed a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over his alleged unlawful detention.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 13, 2025, for the hearing of the case. The adjournment follows a request by Darlington’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, to allow the police’s counsel, Garba Audu, sufficient time to review the documents served.

The legal dispute stems from a December 23, 2024, court order directing the police to either charge Speed Darlington or release him within 48 hours. Despite the order, Darlington, 39, remained in detention, prompting his legal team to escalate the matter.

Darlington’s detention in Lagos is linked to allegations of defamation and cyberstalking, reportedly involving comments he made about Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy.

In his lawsuit, the rapper seeks N300 million in damages for alleged unlawful detention and mistreatment. He also demands either his immediate release or that he be brought before the court.

His legal team has accused the police of subjecting him to torture and inhumane treatment during his detention, further escalating tensions around the case.

This high-profile lawsuit highlights issues of fundamental rights and police accountability, with widespread attention from the public and media expected as the hearing date approaches.
