Nigerian music stars Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, and Asake have cemented their global influence by earning spots on Rolling Stone’s prestigious list of the 250 Greatest Albums of the 21st Century. This recognition highlights the transformative impact of Afrobeats and Nigerian artistry on the global music scene.
Burna Boy’s African Giant (2019) leads the Nigerian entries, celebrated for its genre-blending sound that incorporates Afrobeat, reggae, and pop influences. The critically acclaimed album played a pivotal role in elevating Burna Boy’s international profile.
Wizkid’s Made in Lagos (2020), featuring the global smash hit Essence, was praised for its smooth, immersive rhythms and cross-cultural appeal, further establishing Wizkid as a pioneer of Afrobeats.
Tems’ debut EP For Broken Ears (2020) earned recognition for its introspective and soulful tracks, showcasing her unique vocal prowess and lyrical depth.
Asake’s Mr Money With the Vibe (2022) also made the cut, applauded for its electrifying blend of street-pop and high-energy vibes, which resonated widely with audiences.
The list, which covers albums released between 2000 and 2024, crowned Beyoncé’s Lemonade as the greatest album of the 21st century, with Radiohead’s Kid A securing the second spot. Rolling Stone emphasized that the rankings celebrate diversity and ambition in modern music, highlighting works that pushed creative boundaries.
