Controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, remains in police custody following his rearrest on Tuesday during a show in Owerri, Imo State. His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, revealed that efforts to secure his bail have been unsuccessful.
Speed Darlington was arrested on allegations of cyberstalking fellow Nigerian superstar Burna Boy, with whom he has had a series of public spats.
In a Facebook post shared Wednesday night, Adeyanju disclosed that the singer was transported from Owerri to Abuja by the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Nigerian police brought our client Speed Darlington to Abuja from Owerri this evening and I just met him,” Adeyanju wrote.
“They have refused to release him on bail over defamation of Burna Boy. Burna Boy, the Ojuelegba Fela sings about oppression but oppresses Akpi with the police.”
The arrest comes amid accusations that Speed Darlington defamed Burna Boy online, reigniting discussions about the use of law enforcement to settle personal disputes in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
