Popular social media influencer Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force following a recent controversy surrounding his unauthorized use of a police uniform in a viral video.
VDM’s lawyer, activist Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the detention on Thursday evening through a Facebook post, stating that his client was detained after voluntarily responding to a police invitation. "Our client, VDM has been detained after honouring police invitation just like yesterday,” Adeyanju wrote. He added that despite VDM’s consistent advocacy for police-community relations, his client has been detained.
The controversy began when VDM posted a video wearing what appeared to be an official police uniform, captioning it with, “CSP VDM of the Online Division.” This sparked backlash, leading the police to launch an investigation, with spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi reiterating that unauthorized use of police attire constitutes a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
As the investigation proceeds, supporters and followers of VDM are awaiting updates on the situation, concerned about the potential legal ramifications for the outspoken influencer.
