Police Detain House of Representatives Member Alex Ikwechegh for Assaulting Bolt Driver

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has taken into custody Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, a representative for the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, following allegations of assault against a Bolt driver named Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya.

As detailed in a statement from the FCT Police Command's spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident transpired when Abuwatseya arrived at Ikwegh's home to deliver a package, leading to a disagreement regarding the delivery process.

Ikwegh is accused of slapping a driver and making disrespectful remarks about the Inspector General of Police.

The FCT Police Command has voiced its concerns regarding Ikwegh's behavior, noting that he is currently being interrogated at the Maitama Police Station.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.

“Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning,” the FCT police said.

The incident occurred on Sunday at Ikwegh's residence in Abuja. Mr. Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, had come to deliver a package to the lawmaker when a disagreement emerged regarding the delivery method. It is alleged that Ikwegh slapped the driver during the altercation.

“You are a common bolt driver, you are a poor man and you have pride,” the driver quoted the lawmaker.

The driver was later apprehended and brought to the Maitama Police Station, where he was not allowed to make phone calls. Officers at the station alleged that he had gone to a "Senator" at his residence.

While he has since been released, his vehicle remains in the possession of the police.
