In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Mr. Macaroni revealed the impact his 2021 arrest had on his life, explaining that his traumatic encounter with police brutality stripped him of fear and fueled his commitment to social justice.
In February 2021, following the tragic #EndSARS Lekki Tollgate incident in 2020, Mr. Macaroni joined Nigerian youths in protest against the reopening of the tollgate. Defying a government directive, he was detained and subjected to degrading treatment by officers who, he recalls, seemed to relish his suffering.
"I was stripped naked and molested," he said, vividly recounting the harrowing experience. "The fear disappeared from me after that. They tortured me, and I saw the hate in their eyes.” He added that, despite releasing a skit to shed light on the ordeal, it barely captured the extent of the trauma.
Mr. Macaroni expressed his conviction that his platform comes with a responsibility to advocate for the voiceless, saying, "God gave me this platform not for popularity, but to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. How can I ask others to make sacrifices that I am not willing to make?"
His story has since resonated widely, with many praising his courage and commitment to the cause.
