Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has strongly denied ever having any contact with Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.

During an interview on Channels TV on Thursday, Falana disclosed that neither he nor his family had any dealings with Bobrisky, despite recent allegations suggesting otherwise.

The senior lawyer revealed that the only interaction involving his family came when Bobrisky reached out to his son, rapper and activist Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, for financial assistance while in prison. Bobrisky allegedly asked Falz for ₦3 million to secure a place in the VIP section of the prison. However, Falz refused to assist in what he viewed as an attempt to bribe prison officials.

Falana stated, "Bobrisky never spoke to me, I have never met him, I don’t know him from Adam... My son said this guy was appealing to him for assistance, asking for ₦3 million to be placed in a VIP section of the prison." Falz, after questioning the legitimacy of the request, refused to help, warning Bobrisky to avoid illegal activities and to follow the proper channels in future communications.

The claims about Falana’s involvement in a bribery scheme emerged after social media influencer Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, allegedly spread inaccurate information regarding the human rights lawyer’s role in Bobrisky’s case. VeryDarkMan had previously made unverified accusations, suggesting that Falana and his family were involved in bribery to help Bobrisky during his time in prison.

In response to these allegations, Falana clarified that while his legal team had considered filing criminal complaints, they chose to focus on civil proceedings to restore their integrity. He stressed his commitment to defending freedom of expression but emphasized that false accusations would not go unaddressed.

VeryDarkMan has since apologized to Falana during a House of Representatives hearing on Monday, expressing regret for the false claims. He clarified that he never believed Falana was involved in the bribery allegations involving Bobrisky and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Falana’s comments and VeryDarkMan's public apology have sparked widespread conversations about the importance of accountability and truth in public discourse.
