ID Cabasa Fires Back at Buju Banton Over Afrobeats Criticism

Veteran Nigerian music producer ID Cabasa has dismissed recent remarks by Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton, who condemned Afrobeats as a "shallow and unsubstantial" music genre. Banton had argued that despite its global recognition, Afrobeats fails to highlight Africa's struggles.

Speaking during the Denis Joseph Slattery memorial lecture in Lagos, Cabasa countered Banton’s critique, suggesting that the reggae legend lacks an understanding of the genre’s language and storytelling.

He pointed out that many artists, like Burna Boy, Olamide, and Asake, infuse deep messages into their music, but Banton's unfamiliarity with Nigerian culture and sarcasm might have led to the misunderstanding.

“Buju Banton doesn’t understand the genre. Can he speak our language? No,” Cabasa remarked. He further emphasized that just because Afrobeats artists present their truth in a more straightforward manner doesn’t make their music less substantial.

Cabasa concluded by defending the Afrobeats genre, saying that Banton may be too focused on the rhythm, missing the stories embedded in the lyrics. “That you don’t understand a lot doesn’t mean you should just criticize it,” he added.
