Media personality Chude Jideonwo has sparked discussion with his recent claim that Nigeria's biggest filmmakers predominantly come from the Yoruba part of the country.

In an Instagram post, Jideonwo highlighted the dominance of Yoruba filmmakers in the Nigerian film industry, naming notable figures such as Kemi Adetiba, Kunle Afolayan, Mo Abudu, Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, and Femi Adebayo as prime examples.

He further argued that Yoruba-language films have a stronger presence on global streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon, while Hausa and Igbo-language movies are largely absent. He noted that Yoruba filmmaking culture has merged with mainstream Nigerian cinema, allowing it to thrive both locally and internationally.

Jideonwo explained: “The biggest filmmakers in Nigeria now are all Yorubas... Can you name one Hausa or Igbo-language movie on Netflix or Amazon? The closest was Genevieve’s ‘Lionheart’ many years ago. Only Yoruba movies are able to exist on Amazon, Netflix and become mainstream cultural hits.”

His comments have reignited conversations about the regional dynamics within Nollywood, highlighting the influence of Yoruba filmmakers in shaping Nigeria's global cinematic landscape.
