Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Ayodeji Balogun, famously known as Wizkid, continues to grapple with the profound loss of his mother, Mrs. Jane Morayo Balogun. This deep sorrow is poignantly expressed in his latest collaboration with Asake, titled MMS.
In his verse, Wizkid takes listeners on an emotional journey, reflecting on how his mother's death has significantly impacted his life. He reveals the internal struggle he faced after her passing, admitting that he "lost" himself but eventually rediscovered his purpose.
Wizkid's lyrics are laden with grief and reflection:
"You no fit run from who you are
Man, wetin go be, man, is cast in stone…
Why mama leave me, yeah, e no long
Lost myself and I found my purpose
Yeah, every day, I know that I’m blessed…
Nothing man no face, vibe today
This kind thing, say na life we dey."
Wizkid's mother passed away on August 18, 2023, in London, and the loss has left an indelible mark on the singer. On what would have been her birthday on July 4th, Wizkid openly lamented that his life felt empty without her, expressing how deeply he misses her each day and how his heart remains broken.
In her memory, Wizkid has announced plans to release a new album titled Morayo, named after his mother's middle name. This upcoming project is expected to be a tribute to the woman who meant the world to him, capturing the essence of his grief and love in a way only music can.
