Controversial Nigerian self-proclaimed sex therapist, Hauwa Mohammed, popularly known as Jaruma, has broken her silence on a challenging chapter in her life, revealing how she was introduced to hard drugs and her subsequent battle with addiction.

Jaruma, who had been out of the public eye for over a year, shared her story during a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) X space discussion titled "Drug dependence: Addressing the fear of stigmatisation in recovery and overcoming the demon of drugs and stigma: A survivor’s story."

In March 2023, rumors circulated that Jaruma was undergoing rehabilitation in Abuja for substance abuse after a distressing video of her surfaced online. Addressing these rumors, Jaruma disclosed that her introduction to drugs was facilitated by a famous Lagos plastic surgeon and a close friend.

Recalling the moment that changed her life, she explained that her friend, who was into drugs, invited her to hang out. Initially hesitant, Jaruma refused to partake in marijuana, citing her religious beliefs as a Muslim.

However, curiosity and peer pressure led her to experiment with a substance she later discovered was a powerful inhalant. The initial experience left her unconscious, and despite her anger and confusion, it marked the beginning of her struggle with addiction.

Jaruma also detailed a disturbing encounter with the Lagos-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Anu, who offered her an injection to help her "forget all her problems." This injection, which she later became dependent on, had devastating effects on her physical and mental health. What started as a single dose quickly escalated to multiple doses, leading to severe side effects, including seizures and suicidal thoughts.

At the height of her addiction, Jaruma revealed that she attempted to end her life by deliberately overdosing on the injections. Fortunately, her workers found her in time, and she was rushed to a hospital where doctors managed to save her life.

Her story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of seeking help. Jaruma's decision to speak out about her experiences is part of her ongoing recovery journey and a message to others about the risks of drug dependence and the challenges of overcoming addiction.
