Tunde Onakoya, the visionary behind Chess in Slum Africa, has been making waves in his bid to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, currently underway in Times Square, New York.
Onakoya embarked on this remarkable journey on Wednesday, April 17, with the goal of completing a 58-hour game—a feat aimed at impacting the lives of countless children worldwide.
As of this update, the 29-year-old philanthropist has crossed the 48-hour mark, engaging in over 100 unbeaten games with New York's esteemed chess master, Shawn Martinez, and several other players.
In his quest to secure the Guinness World Record, Onakoya seeks to raise $1 million for children's education through the gift of chess.
Recent reports from his organization's official social media page reveal that donations totaling $59,068 (approximately N63,645,770) have poured in from generous individuals, including Nigerians, in support of this noble cause.
With unwavering support from fans, both locally and internationally, Onakoya is poised to make history and bring home the Guinness World Record title.
Notable Nigerian figures and celebrities, such as Adekunle Gold, Davido, Chioma Rowland, Asa Asika, and Sowore, have graced the event to show their solidarity with Tunde.
Despite facing challenges, including intense vomiting and stomach pain, the chess marathon continues to showcase Onakoya's resilience and determination.
Scheduled to conclude today, Friday, April 19, the marathon has recently shifted to a new location in Times Square, between 47th and 48th Street, near Olive Garden.
