The Abia State Police Command has officially confirmed the unfortunate demise of Happiness Echieze, a female evangelist, in a guest house situated in Aba.
According to a statement issued by ASP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Pastor Timothy Otu, has been taken into custody in connection with the passing of the 43-year-old woman. The statement indicates that the authorities are treating the incident as a potential case of murder.
Pastor Timothy Otu, affiliated with the Agape Evangelical Ministry at Obikabia Junction in Obingwa LGA, who resides at Jubilee Guest House in Ovom village, Obingwa LGA, reported an incident to the Isialangwa Police Division.
The statement reads that the clergyman is cooperating with the police investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the woman's demise in his hotel room.
Chinaka detailed that the pastor and the woman had checked into a hotel in Ovom village on August 12, 2023, at approximately 9:23 PM. Subsequently, the woman's lifeless body, unclothed and exuding a white substance from her mouth and nose, was discovered in the room around midnight. The pastor was absent from the scene.
The police statement narrates, "On the evening of August 12, 2023, around 09:25 PM, a clergyman named Timothy Otu (male), associated with Agape Evangelical Ministry at Obikabia Junction in Obingwa LGA, had checked into the guest house along with a woman named Happiness Echieze (female) from Isialangwa LGA, Abia State. Happiness Echieze was 43 years of age. Further details provided by Mr. Akpan indicated that on the same date, around 12:00 am he entered the hotel room of the aforementioned clergyman and discovered the lifeless body of Happiness Echieze. She was found unclothed, and a white substance was emanating from her mouth and nose. Regrettably, the clergyman was absent from the scene."
The police have initiated preliminary investigations, transporting the deceased's body to the SDA Mortuary in Aba for an autopsy examination.
While the police statement clearly defines the incident as a suspected murder case and has transferred the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for thorough inquiries, it's important to note that several local online media outlets in Abia State had previously reported that the late Evangelist Happiness Echieze passed away in the guest house during a purported sexual encounter with Pastor Timothy Otu, whom she was allegedly involved with romantically before the tragic event.
These sources also claimed that the deceased Evangelist left behind five children, with her husband allegedly residing in Bayelsa State.
