From the latest World Athletics women’s ranking, Nigerian Hurdle’s queen Tobi Amusan sits in the 5th position. At the same time, Ese Brume leapt to 61st position announcing the fantastic season the duo are having this year.

As the ladies continue to enjoy global acclaim, one can just look back to the series of successes they attained this year.

Amusan soared 38 places to move up to rank 5th in the world, which is a remarkably massive rise for her in the space of a year compared to the 43rd position she ranked in September 2021. For the past four months, Amusan has been incredible, and there is none stopping her.

At the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, she set a new World Record with a time of 12.12secs to win gold in the 100m hurdles to become Nigeria’s first World Champion.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, she successfully defended her 100m hurdles title to set a new games record of 12.30s.

Now World Champion, Amusan defended her Diamond League 100m hurdles title in Zurich, Switzerland. She also did it in Berlin at a time of 12.45s.

Meanwhile, her compatriot and Olympics bronze medalist Brume ranked 93rd within the same period and hopped to 61st in the rankings. She moved 32 places to become the second-best ranked Nigerian on the list.

When it comes to Hurdles, Amusan sits on the throne as Number 1 from the latest ranking.

Ese Brume has been the most consistent Nigerian athlete in recent years; she can be leaned on to always deliver a medal for Nigeria.

At the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics that took place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Brume clutched the Bronze medal for Nigeria, and she has been impressive since then.

Brume also won a silver medal at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships, Nigeria’s only medal in that competition.

A couple of months later, the 26-year-old won a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships to make history as the first African to win two long jump medals in the competition’s history.

Not ready to back down just yet, during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Ese leaped a 7.0m jump to win gold at the women’s long jump event, breaking the game record in the process.

However, when it comes to Long Jump, Ese occupies Number 3 spot in the current ranking.

The remarkable feat of the ladies moved the Nigerian president, President Muhammadu Buhari, to confer Amusan and Brume with the national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON) and a cash reward of N4.5 million each during a State House visit on Thursday.
