ASUU Strike: NANS protest cripple activities at Lagos airport

Several flights were rescheduled yesterday as students occupied roads leading to the airport from the ongoing protest by Nigerian students at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

The students occupied the airport, crippling the activities over the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The students blocked the international airport from 7 am, thereby causing gridlock on both ends of the airport.

After some hours, they proceeded to the domestic airport, causing a heavy traffic jam along the airport road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Road leading to the local airport.

Both the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) and terminal two, operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Service Limited (BASL) of the Airport and the MMA, were shut down by the students who prevented passengers from accessing the airport.

At the GAT, the protesting students were joined briefly by a former Students Union Government president of the University of Lagos and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore.

He joined in solidarity with the students and decried the inability of the federal government and ASUU to resolve the lingering strike.

As a result of the protest, some local and international flights were rescheduled.
