On Saturday, far away in Abidjan, the Nigerian national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, walked over Guinea 89-70 in their second match of the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.

The match was played at the 3,500-capacity Palais des Sports Treichville, where the Nigerian side came from a loss to Cote D’Ivoire in their first match.

The D’Tigers started on a high note accumulating 24-15 points to take the lead in the first quarter. However, in the second quarter, the two teams tied at 20-20, but at the halftime break, D’Tigers led by nine points.

However, in the third quarter, everything changed as the D’Tigers held their opponents at their jugular by 32-15. They held on to that lead into the last quarter.

Guinea won the fourth quarter by 20-13, which was not enough as the D’Tigers accumulated all their point through the halves to win 89-70.

Top performers for D’Tigers include: Amanze Egekeze (14 points), Metu (12 points) and Uche Iroegbu (11 points).

With a game left against Angola on Sunday, the D’Tigers will conclude their window 4 of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.

There are five slots for African teams to pick up for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and the D’Tigers are hoping to win one.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup is billed to happen in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10.
