During a Police raid of a building in Benin City, 20 mummified bodies, including those of children, were discovered in the house, and three men were arrested in connection with the discovery.
Shockingly the said building was located three miles from the centre of Benin City.
The police spokesperson, Jennifer Iwegbu, confirmed the shocking case and the arrest of three suspects in a statement late Wednesday. She said armed policemen raided the building in Benin City, the Edo State capital, based on intelligence indicating that it was a “suspected ritual shrine.”
“Fifteen mummified male corpses, three mummified female corpses, and two mummified children corpses were discovered at the scene,” just three miles (5km) from the city centre, said Iwegbu.
This is not the first time Nigeria’s security forces are uncovering such shrines used by ritualists and kidnappers; however, this current discovery is the most shocking in recent years, considering the number of victims.
When the news filtered out, many residents came to the scene, and when they got there, they expressed horror over what seemed to have been a covet operation hidden away from the eyes of even nearby neighbours.
However, the number of years the bodies had been in the building is not immediately clear, and according to the police, the suspects are being interrogated.
“An intensive effort is ongoing to arrest the other fleeing suspects,” she added.
The three suspects have been identified as Chimaobi Okoewu and Oko Samuel, both of Afikpo in Ebonyi, and Gideon Sunday from Akwa-Ibom State, while others reportedly fled.
