Nigerian’s Falconets just completed a 100% group stage performance as they trash their Canadian opponent in a pulsating match of the ongoing FIFA Under 20 Women World Cup in Costa Rica in the early hours of Thursday, August 18, 2022.

The Nigerian ladies came into the match against Canada with two victories, hoping to proceed to the next stage as Group C leader. They played their third game at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela against Canada today.

While the Falconets were playing against Canada, France and South Korea were slugging it out with each other in a simultaneously Group C fixture.

Canada came into the game having lost both matches and hoping to salvage their world cup dream with at least a win over the Nigerian girls; however, this was not to be. Canada just watched their dreams fade away as the Nigerian girls celebrated their three goals and perfect record.

Although the Canadians gave the Nigerian girls a run for their money, scoring first in the match in the 2nd minute from Kaila Novak as a result of the Nigerian goalkeeper’s mistake.

However, the Falconets started their comeback from a well struck penalty kick from Esther Onyenezide after a handball by Canada.

In the same manner, the Queen of Penalties, Onyenezide, netted the second goal from the spot sending the goalkeeper in a different direction to score the goal. The second penalty came from a dangerous tackle by a Canadian defender. The first half ended with Canada trailing by 2 goals to 1.

The second half started on a high note, and the Nigerian side was able to cage the Canadians from causing any damage even with their threats. However, towards the end of the match, the Falconets made it 3 by a well timed cross that Chioma Olise, the substitute, converted.

With that win, Nigeria qualified for the quarter-finals and would play the Netherlands next.
