NCC Plans To Curb Cyber-Crime In Nigeria

Umar Garba Dantbatta
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced plans to introduce a code of practice for internet service providers (ISPs) in a bid to curb cyber-crimes in Nigeria.

The new code will help to secure the country’s cyberspace against imminent threats from attackers and also address issues such as online child protection, privacy and data protection and objectionable contents among others.

NCC executive vice chairman, Umar Garba Danbatta emphasised that while the regulatory intervention and other initiatives were going on to sanitise the internet, consumers must play their role. He said the NCC would educate consumers on its initiatives and programmes, adding that ISPs should also tell consumers how to mitigate the effects of cyber-crimes.

The Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Felicia Onwuegbuchulam, said as broadband penetration gets deeper for the promotion of positive engagements and efficient economic activities, the tendency for some Internet users to use such access for criminal and illegal activities is also on the rise, thereby requiring adequate consumer education.

Onwuegbuchulam, also said that cyber-criminals would continue to make the internet unsafe unless consumers were aware of the cyber-crime trend and made efforts to ensure safe use of connected devices.
