The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts has unveiled “Nigeria Unseen” as the central theme for its 2027 competition, encouraging young Nigerian filmmakers to use documentary storytelling to highlight overlooked people, places and experiences across the country.
The competition will provide an opportunity for Nigerian filmmakers between the ages of 18 and 35 to present stories that challenge familiar perceptions of Nigeria and introduce audiences to perspectives that may not receive sufficient attention.
According to the organisers, participants are expected to produce documentaries that reveal a different side of the country by focusing on individuals and experiences that deserve wider recognition.
The organisers announced the theme through a post on Instagram on Sunday, November 1, 2026, urging interested filmmakers to approach the subject with creativity and a fresh perspective.
The winning entry will compete for a $20,000 prize. However, submissions must meet the competition's production and eligibility requirements.
Films submitted for consideration must have a maximum running time of 20 minutes and must be completed between January 2026 and April 2027.
The entry portal will open on February 1, 2027, through FilmFreeway, giving eligible filmmakers an opportunity to submit their projects ahead of the closing date.
The organisers have fixed 11:59 p.m. West Africa Time on Friday, April 30, 2027, as the deadline for receiving entries.
The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts was established by Nigeria LNG Limited in 2025 as part of efforts to recognise outstanding creative work and encourage the development of filmmaking and storytelling in Nigeria.
Its inaugural competition concluded in October, with two filmmakers emerging as winners. Peter Oghenetega-Oke received recognition for his documentary, Beyond Tarkwa Bay, while Feranmi Abiola was honoured for Mara Mania.
Both filmmakers shared the $20,000 prize, marking the first edition of the award and highlighting the potential of Nigerian documentary filmmaking.
With the announcement of the 2027 theme, the organisers are looking to build on the competition's early success by encouraging more young creatives to document stories that reflect the country's diversity and complexity.
The new edition is expected to provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their abilities while contributing to conversations about Nigeria through original documentary productions.
