Nigerian singer Magixx has offered a glimpse into the business side of the music industry, explaining how artistes signed to Don Jazzy's Mavin Records build their earning power and what it takes to start making money from their music.

The singer, who joined the record label in 2021, disclosed that getting signed to one of Nigeria's biggest music labels does not necessarily mean an artiste starts making huge money immediately. According to him, the focus initially is on producing a song capable of gaining attention beyond Nigeria before the financial rewards begin to come in.

Magixx explained that new signees are expected to deliver music with international appeal, suggesting that the label prioritises building an artiste's market presence before focusing on the financial returns.

During a conversation,  he said:

“When Don Jazzy signs you, you first have to drop a song with international appeal before cashing out. It takes 2–3 months before you start making money. One hit song can earn you ₦500k–₦700k per show, while another hit can take your fee to ₦1.5 million.”

His revelation has offered fans a rare look at the relationship between hit songs, artiste development and performance earnings within the Nigerian entertainment industry.

For many upcoming musicians, securing a record deal is often seen as the biggest breakthrough in their careers. However, Magixx's account suggests that signing with an established label is only one part of the journey, with the success of an artiste's music playing a major role in determining how much they can earn.

The singer's comments also point to the commercial importance of having records that connect with a wider audience. Beyond streaming numbers and social media popularity, a successful song can increase an artiste's demand for live performances, corporate events and other entertainment bookings.

Magixx, whose real name is Alexander Adelabu, was unveiled by Don Jazzy as a Mavin Records artiste in September 2021. He introduced himself to the label's audience with his self-titled debut EP, which featured songs that helped establish his sound.

He has since released tracks including Love Don't Cost a Dime, All Over and Shaye, gradually building his profile in the Nigerian music scene.

His latest comments have also drawn attention to the business structure behind artiste management, particularly how record labels invest in developing talent and creating music with the potential to generate revenue.

While the figures he mentioned reflect the earning potential associated with successful records, they do not necessarily represent a fixed payment structure for every Mavin artiste.

For emerging musicians hoping to break into the industry, Magixx's experience reinforces one important point: getting signed may open the door, but making music that connects with a large audience is what can turn that opportunity into serious money.
