Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has shared how his personal assistant came to his rescue emotionally after 17 consecutive radio callers chose to speak with Funke Akindele instead of him during a promotional appearance.
The entertainer recounted the incident while reflecting on the competitive nature of movie promotion and the influence Funke Akindele has built through her consistent efforts to market her projects.
AY explained that the experience happened when he was promoting his film, The Waiter, around the same period Funke Akindele was preparing audiences for her December cinema release.
Looking back, he admitted that he might have chosen an unfavourable release period, considering the attention Funke Akindele typically attracts whenever she launches a new production.
He suggested that waiting until her film had completed its cinema run might have been a better decision.
He also recalled an appearance at Cool FM, where the presenter proposed interviewing both entertainers together. AY welcomed the idea, believing it would give them an opportunity to interact with listeners.
However, the interview took an unexpected direction when the presenter opened the phone lines and asked listeners which of the two personalities they wanted to speak with.
According to AY, the first 17 callers all requested to speak with Funke Akindele. The presenter eventually had to remind the audience that he was also present in the studio.
One caller even addressed Funke before asking AY when he intended to purchase a ticket for her film, Everybody Loves Jenifa.
Although the situation initially left him feeling overlooked, the comedian received an unexpected boost when the presenter announced one final opportunity for a listener to call in.
This time, the caller specifically requested to speak with AY and showered him with praise for his contributions to Nollywood, his Guinness World Records achievement and his support for the comedy industry.
The caller also acknowledged his decision to feature Funke Akindele in his productions, including A Trip to Jamaica, and encouraged him not to feel intimidated by anyone.
AY later discovered that the emotional show of support had been carefully arranged by his personal assistant, who had secretly made the final call.
His assistant revealed that he had been listening to the programme and noticed how disappointed AY had become after the earlier callers repeatedly selected Funke Akindele.
To lift his boss's spirits, he pretended to be a listener calling from Ikorodu and delivered the encouraging message.
AY said the gesture completely changed his mood, adding that he left the radio station feeling much better.
The incident, he noted, also gave him a personal reminder of the importance of having supportive people around him.
