Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has urged men to rethink how they spend money in relationships, warning that financial support should never become a reason to threaten, harm or kill a woman who chooses to move on.
According to Edochie, a man’s decision to spend money on his partner does not give him ownership over her or the right to dictate what she does with her life. He believes men need to understand that relationships can end, even after one partner has invested considerable time, effort and money.
He made it clear that a woman leaving a relationship for another man does not justify violence against her. Spending money on someone, he argued, is a personal decision, and it should not later be treated as a debt that the other person must repay with loyalty or continued commitment.
Edochie expressed his position in the following words:
“Men, no matter how much money you spend on a woman, it doesn’t give you the right to h@rm her if she leaves you for another man.
It doesn’t make her deserving of d£@th.
She never forced you to spend your money.
You did it out of your own free will.
No woman forces a man to spend his money on her.
To avoid such stories, men have sense.
Spend your money on yourself.
Invest in yourself.
If you want to spend your money on a woman, spend what you can forfeit, incase things go wrong.”
His message also touches on financial responsibility, particularly for men who feel pressured to spend beyond their means to maintain a relationship. Rather than putting all their resources into impressing a partner, he encourages men to pay attention to their own needs, build their finances and invest in their future.
The point is not necessarily that men should stop spending money on women or avoid being generous in relationships. Instead, it is about understanding personal limits and making financial decisions without expecting a guaranteed outcome in return.
A relationship can come to an end for many reasons, and neither partner is obligated to remain in it simply because money has been spent. Gifts, financial assistance and other forms of support should not become tools for control or threats when things no longer work out.
Edochie’s position is that men must learn to separate disappointment in love from the way they treat others. Rejection and heartbreak can be painful, but they do not justify abuse or violence.
Ultimately, his advice is simple: spend responsibly, build yourself and never allow money invested in a relationship to become an excuse for harming another person.
