Nollywood actress Uche Ogbodo has appealed to Nigerians to show greater respect when expressing disagreements with celebrities, stressing that public figures should not be subjected to insults simply because their opinions differ from those of their followers.

The actress made the appeal in a lengthy message shared on social media, where she reflected on the way celebrities are treated by members of the public whenever they speak about issues or express personal beliefs.

According to Ogbodo, celebrities often receive widespread support when their opinions align with what their fans want to hear.

However, she noted that the same admiration can quickly disappear when a celebrity takes a position that differs from popular opinion.

She argued that being an entertainer does not mean surrendering personal opinions or beliefs to satisfy the public.

Ogbodo explained that people have the right to disagree with her views, challenge her arguments or decide not to support her.

However, she maintained that such disagreements should not become an excuse for personal attacks or dehumanising comments.

The actress also reminded her audience that celebrities remain individuals with their own experiences, convictions and perspectives despite their public status.

She said the relationship between public figures and their supporters should not be based solely on agreement, suggesting that genuine respect should remain even when people hold opposing views.

“If you only love me when I agree with you, you love the version of me that makes you comfortable,” Ogbodo stated.

She added that she would continue to express herself and stand by issues she believes in, while recognising that her opinions would not appeal to everyone.

The actress further encouraged Nigerians to understand that disagreement is a normal part of public discourse. In her view, people should be able to challenge an opinion without attacking the individual who holds it.

Her comments come amid the growing interaction between Nigerian celebrities and their followers on social media, where public figures frequently share personal opinions on entertainment, relationships, social issues and other matters.

Social media has made it easier for celebrities to communicate directly with their audiences, but it has also created an environment where disagreements can quickly develop into heated exchanges.

She made it clear that she does not expect everyone to agree with her, but believes that disagreement should not remove the basic respect owed to another person.

The actress concluded her message with a simple appeal: people may reject her opinions or choose not to support her, but they should still recognise her right to have and express her own views.
