Nollywood actress Wumi Toriola has appealed to schools and parents to take necessary precautions to protect children from the intense heat currently being experienced across the country.
The actress, who expressed concern over the impact of the hot weather on children, encouraged school authorities to prioritise pupils’ wellbeing while urging parents to ensure their children have enough drinking water and wear lightweight clothing.
Toriola shared the advice in a message highlighting the importance of staying hydrated and taking appropriate measures as the new week begins.
Addressing school authorities, the actress called for additional safety measures to help children cope with the prevailing weather conditions.
She also reminded parents to pay closer attention to their children’s hydration needs, particularly when preparing them for school.
“As a concerned mother, I appeal to our schools to take extra precautions during this period of intense heat,” she wrote.
She further advised parents to increase the quantity of water their children take to school, encourage them to drink regularly and dress them in clothes suitable for the hot weather.
“And parents, increase your water bottles, add extra water, remind them to hydrate well and dress lightly.
“Just a reminder as we enter a new week,” Toriola added.
Her message has drawn attention to the need for parents and educational institutions to work together in ensuring that children remain comfortable and safe during periods of extreme heat.
Children may spend several hours at school, where outdoor activities, crowded classrooms and inadequate ventilation can make hot weather particularly uncomfortable.
Ensuring access to drinking water and allowing pupils to take breaks when necessary can help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Parents can also support their children by providing reusable water bottles, choosing breathable clothing and reminding them to drink water throughout the day rather than waiting until they feel thirsty.
Schools, meanwhile, can consider adjusting outdoor activities during the hottest periods, improving classroom ventilation and providing shaded areas where pupils can rest.
Teachers and other school staff can also watch for warning signs such as dizziness, unusual tiredness, headaches and excessive weakness.
Toriola’s intervention reflects a broader concern about the welfare of children during challenging weather conditions. Her appeal encourages families and school administrators to remain attentive to the possible effects of prolonged exposure to heat.
Although her message was brief, the actress used her platform to share practical reminders that parents can incorporate into their daily routines.
The actress is known for her activities in the Yoruba film industry and frequently engages with her audience on social media.
Her latest message serves as a reminder that protecting children during hot weather requires cooperation between homes and schools, with adequate hydration, appropriate clothing and sensible precautions remaining important parts of their daily care.
