Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has shared his reservations about marriage, arguing that women often bear greater responsibilities and make significant sacrifices in building a family.

Uzor Arukwe expressed his views during an appearance on the In My Opinion podcast, where he discussed societal expectations surrounding marriage and the pressure placed on women to settle down and have children.

According to Uzor Arukwe, his perspective is influenced by the demands women face in traditional marriages, including pregnancy, childbirth and the expectation that they adopt their husbands’ surnames.

The actor believes these responsibilities contribute to the challenges women experience in marriage. He also noted that society is gradually recognising that a woman’s worth should not be determined by whether she is married.

Uzor Arukwe recalled how women were often questioned about their marital status when they reached the ages of 25 or 30, with some people comparing their lives to those who had already married and raised children.

However, he observed that attitudes are changing, with more women making independent decisions about marriage and motherhood.

Speaking during the podcast, Uzor Arukwe said he had never really been an advocate for marriage because he felt the institution was more demanding for women.

He also revealed that he had encountered women who chose not to have children, highlighting the different priorities people have when making decisions about their futures.

Uzor Arukwe’s comments have contributed to ongoing conversations about marriage, gender roles and societal expectations in contemporary society.

His position challenges the traditional belief that women must marry and have children by a certain age, emphasising that marriage does not define a woman’s identity or success.
