TikTok has dismissed claims that it deliberately restricted access to its platform in some parts of Northern Nigeria, following reports that users in several states have struggled to access videos and upload content.

The social media company said it was not responsible for the reported disruption, which has reportedly affected users in Kaduna, Kebbi, Kano and Sokoto states since September 14, 2026.

Keagile Makgoba, TikTok’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, addressed the situation in a statement on Monday, October 12.

According to Makgoba, the company did not impose the restriction blamed for the difficulties experienced by users in the affected areas.

She explained that TikTok was engaging relevant stakeholders to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported access problems and work towards resolving the situation.

Makgoba also reiterated the company's commitment to maintaining access to its platform for its communities.

Her comments come amid growing concerns over reports that residents in parts of Northern Nigeria have been unable to use the platform normally.

Affected users have reportedly encountered problems loading videos, viewing content and uploading their own materials.

The difficulties have raised questions about what might be responsible for the disruption and whether it is connected to technical problems or an external directive.

Although TikTok has denied implementing any restriction, the cause of the reported disruption remains unclear based on the company's statement.

The situation has attracted the attention of a coalition of civil society organisations, which has called for an independent investigation into the matter.

The groups want the relevant authorities and telecommunications operators to examine the reported difficulties and determine what has prevented users in the affected states from accessing the platform without interruption.

They also urged those involved to provide a public explanation of the circumstances surrounding the situation.

In particular, the organisations want clarification on whether the reported disruption resulted from a government directive, an action by telecommunications providers or a technical fault.

The coalition's demand reflects concerns about the importance of transparency when digital platforms become difficult to access, especially when the problems affect users across multiple locations.

TikTok has become an important platform for entertainment, news, communication and content creation, with individuals and businesses using it to reach audiences and promote their activities.

For content creators who depend on the service to publish videos and engage followers, prolonged access difficulties could affect their ability to maintain regular activity and connect with their audiences.

Businesses that use TikTok to advertise products and services could also experience disruptions if their intended customers cannot access their content.

However, it remains uncertain how widespread the reported difficulties are and whether all users in the named states have been affected in the same way.

TikTok's denial has also left questions about the source of the problem unanswered, making further clarification from telecommunications operators and relevant authorities important.

The company has indicated that it is engaging stakeholders to address the situation, but no specific timeline for resolving the reported access difficulties was provided in the statement.

As calls for an independent investigation continue, affected users will be looking for a clear explanation of what caused the disruption and when normal access to the platform will be restored.

For now, TikTok maintains that the reported restriction was not imposed by the company.
