Nigerian entertainer Teni has shared an experience from her past when an attempt to secure employment by exaggerating her abilities ended in an unexpected dismissal.
The singer recounted how she ventured into nanny work but struggled to keep the jobs she secured, revealing that she worked for two families but did not last a full week in either position.
Reflecting on the experience, Teni said, “I was once a nanny for three days. I did two nanny jobs but didn’t last up to 1 week.”
She explained that one of the jobs involved working for a female doctor whose husband was Nigerian. During the recruitment process, her prospective employers asked her about the tasks she could handle, prompting her to claim a skill she did not actually possess.
According to Teni, she included cooking among her abilities on her CV, apparently without anticipating that her prospective employer would expect her to demonstrate that skill as part of her duties.
“The second nanny person was a doctor and her husband was Nigerian, they asked me what I can do and I lied on my CV that I can cook,” she said.
However, the situation took an unfortunate turn when she was asked to prepare food. Having presented herself as someone capable of cooking, she was left to deal with an expectation she was not prepared to meet.
Teni admitted that her cooking attempt went badly, with the food getting burnt. The mistake ultimately affected her employment, as her employer contacted her the following day and told her not to return.
“I didn't know they'll say I should actually cook. When I tried cooking everything burnt and the next day she called me and said don't bother coming. I got fired,” she recounted.
Her account highlights how misrepresenting one's abilities during a job application can create problems once an employer expects those skills to be demonstrated in practice.
Although Teni's story is basically on an unsuccessful stint as a nanny, it also offers a relatable account of an early work experience that did not go according to plan. What began with a claim about her cooking ability ended with the loss of the job after she was unable to meet that expectation.
The entertainer's recollection has drawn attention to the incident, particularly the unexpected consequences of claiming a skill on a CV without being able to deliver on the job.
