Nigerian singer Skales has taken aim at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a recent operation at Applewood Estate in Lekki, Lagos, where officers reportedly slapped a woman who was on a phone call and dragged a suspect to the floor.
The incident has drawn the singer's attention to what he sees as the misuse of power by the commission, particularly in its dealings with young Nigerians. Skales questioned the approach taken by EFCC operatives and argued that the agency should also show the same determination when dealing with politicians accused of stealing public funds.
Reacting to a video showing the reported incident, the singer did not hold back in expressing his displeasure with the officers' conduct.
"I just saw a video of the abuse EFCC personnel did to a lady. The misuse of power needs to stop. Show the same energy to the politicians that steal billions. The youth are not your problem. Stop acting like armed robbers.
@EFCC stop acting like armed robbers; you're meant to help society, not become enemies of society.
I still have trauma from how they broke into my house the last time, causing my newborn's mum to drop her. I still do! I hate them.
So EFCC is back to be a nuisance again. It's time for the youths to stand against these evil people who will leave politicians who stole billions and behold disturbing young people.
If you live on Orchid Road and you're a youth, do not let them oppress you. Record and post every video of them vandalising your properties and whatever abuse they do. It's time to put an end to the misuse of power by EFCC, and it's personal".
Beyond his criticism of the Lekki operation, Skales also brought up a previous encounter with EFCC operatives at his residence. According to the singer, the raid left him with lasting emotional distress, particularly because of what happened to the mother of his newborn child during the incident.
He said the experience still affects him, making it clear that his anger towards the commission is connected to what he claims happened inside his home.
Skales also questioned why young people appear to receive such attention from the agency while politicians allegedly involved in the theft of billions of naira seem to escape the same level of scrutiny. His comments centred on what he considers an imbalance in how the commission carries out its duties.
The singer further called on young residents around Orchid Road to remain alert during EFCC operations. He encouraged them to record incidents involving alleged misconduct, including the destruction of property, and make the footage public.
His message was that officers entrusted with enforcing the law should carry out their duties without abusing the people they are meant to serve.
The singer said he wants the EFCC to be held accountable for the conduct of its personnel and to apply the law fairly, regardless of who is involved.
