Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has explained how his interactions with younger people have influenced his lifestyle, outlook and ability to maintain a youthful spirit despite being 65.

The veteran actor said working closely with younger colleagues exposes him to fresh ideas, keeps him mentally active and influences his communication style and fashion choices.

RMD shared these insights during an interview on At His Right Hand, where he discussed the habits that help him remain energetic and connected to younger generations.

According to him, most of the people he works with are considerably younger, creating an environment where he constantly learns new things even when they disagree with one another.

He explained that their workplace relationships are not always smooth, as arguments and occasional exchanges are part of their interactions. However, he sees those moments as opportunities to gain knowledge and understand different perspectives.

“Interacting with young people helps me retain my youthful energy. I think my oldest staff member is 28 or 27. I like to work with younger people. We fight, disagree and abuse each other, but even in their foolishness, I learn a lot of things,” he said.

The actor added that becoming a father early in life also contributed to his ability to relate comfortably with younger people.

He noted that he has always maintained a close relationship with his children, often communicating with them as though they were his age mates. According to him, this has influenced the way he speaks, dresses and relates with people.

“I also had kids early in my life, so I’m constantly talking to them as though we’re agemates. It affects how I speak and dress,” he added.

RMD refuses to let age define him

Beyond his interactions with younger people, the actor said his attitude towards ageing has played an important role in maintaining his active lifestyle.

RMD explained that he does not begin each day by focusing on his age or allowing the number of years he has lived to determine what he can accomplish.

Instead, he wakes up with a focus on his responsibilities and the things he wants to achieve, regardless of whether his body feels ready for the demands of the day.

He said concentrating on his goals rather than physical discomfort helps him remain committed to his activities.

“And I don’t let the old man in. I don’t wake up saying I’m 65; I wake up just wanting to do things. I’m in a state of being myself, and I just wake up to do what I have to do without considering whether my body is cooperating or not, because if my head is strong enough, then my body has no choice,” he stated.

His remarks reflect his belief that age should not automatically become a limitation or prevent people from pursuing their interests.

A career spanning decades

RMD began gaining prominence in the late 1980s and has remained one of the recognisable figures in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Over the years, he has built a successful career across television, theatre and film, earning recognition for his performances in several Nollywood productions.

Apart from acting, he has also become known for his distinctive fashion sense, frequently attracting attention for his stylish appearances at public events and on social media.

His approach to fashion has contributed to his image as one of the industry’s well-dressed personalities, with many admirers praising his ability to maintain a contemporary appearance.

The actor’s latest comments offer insight into the personal habits and relationships that have helped shape his outlook over the years.

By maintaining close interactions with younger colleagues and family members, RMD believes he continues to learn, adapt and remain connected to changing trends.

His position also highlights the value of relationships between generations, suggesting that learning does not stop with age or professional experience.
