The disagreement over the burial arrangements of late gospel singer Toluwanisings has drawn a comparison from Joseph Aloba, the father of late singer Mohbad, who believes there are similarities between the situation and the problems his own family has faced since his son's d£ath.
Joseph, popularly known as Baba Mohbad, questioned the relationship between Toluwanisings and his relatives, suggesting that his wife, Elizabeth Akanbi, may have played a part in creating distance between them.
One of the issues he raised was the difference in the living conditions of the singer's father and his mother-in-law. He pointed out that Toluwanisings' father reportedly lives in a room for which he pays ₦35,000 yearly, while his mother-in-law enjoys a more comfortable home with air conditioning.
He also accused Elizabeth of turning her husband against his family.
Speaking about the matter, he said:
“People are saying Toluwanisings’ case is like Mohbad’s case, but the mother-in-law is living in a good house with AC, while Toluwani’s dad is living in a room where he pays ₦35k per year. You married a man and turned him against his family”.
His comparison comes against the background of the disagreements he has had with Mohbad's widow, Omowunmi Aloba, popularly known as Wunmi, since the singer died in September 2023.
What happened to Mohbad?
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, died on September 12, 2023, in Lagos at the age of 27. His death came after he reportedly developed complications following an injection administered by an auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, at his residence.
The circumstances surrounding his final hours raised serious questions, especially because of previous allegations of harassment and assault involving his former record label boss, Naira Marley, and his associate, Sam Larry.
Mohbad was buried the following day, but his remains were later exhumed on September 21, 2023, to allow for an autopsy after calls for a proper investigation into his d£ath.
The Lagos State Coroner's Court concluded its inquest in July 2025. Although the court could not establish a definite cause of d£ath because of the condition of his remains, it linked his sudden reaction to the injection and recommended the prosecution of the auxiliary nurse over alleged medical negligence.
Mohbad's father and Wunmi's disagreement
After Mohbad's d£ath, Joseph Aloba and Wunmi became involved in a series of disagreements, particularly over the paternity of the singer's son, Liam.
Joseph has repeatedly requested a DNA test to establish whether Liam is biologically related to his late son. Wunmi has been involved in the legal proceedings surrounding the request, making the matter a prolonged source of tension between both families.
The disagreement has also affected plans to give Mohbad a final burial, as his father has maintained that the paternity question should be resolved before his son's remains are reburied.
The matter has continued through the courts, with disagreements over the testing process, the choice of laboratory and how the samples should be handled.
Why Baba Mohbad sees similarities
Looking at his comments about Toluwanisings, Joseph appears to be relating the current disagreement to his own experience with Wunmi.
In both situations, disagreements between a widow and her late husband's relatives have become part of the family issues following the man's death. For Joseph, the relationship between a husband and his family is an important part of the matter.
However, the circumstances are different. Mohbad's family dispute includes a prolonged paternity case, disagreements over his burial and questions surrounding the investigation into his death. Toluwanisings' disagreement, on the other hand, centres largely on his final resting place and the wishes of his widow and paternal family.
Toluwanisings d!ed on October 14, 2026, after reportedly slumping in Ibadan. His d£ath was followed by disagreements between his widow and relatives over where he should be buried.
At the moment, the disagreement seems to remain unresolved, with both sides yet to reach an agreement on the burial arrangements.
