Nigerian actress and DJ Dorcas Shola Fapson, popularly known as Ms. DSF, has questioned the decision to have children when one is struggling financially, arguing that parents should consider the cost of raising a family before bringing children into the world.

The entertainer believes financial readiness should be part of the decision to become a parent, especially because children depend on their parents for basic needs such as food, education and other necessities. She noted that when parents cannot comfortably meet these responsibilities, the situation can become difficult for everyone involved.

To explain her position, Ms. DSF spoke about a cousin who has five children and has reportedly struggled financially since the birth of her first child.

According to the actress, her cousin regularly seeks financial assistance to pay school fees and provide food for the children. The situation has made her question why someone would continue having children without first considering whether they could afford to raise them.

“Po0r people shouldn't have kids. I don't think it is fair to the children. It is not fair to the family. It is not fair to you. I have a cousin that has five kids and she has been broke since she had the first one

Why do you have five? Every week, she is requesting for financial assistance for school fees, feeding. It is so unfair. Why have kids when you don't have means to sustain them? It is not fair....”

Ms. DSF's argument centres on the responsibilities that come with parenthood. Beyond the decision to have children, parents must also think about how they will provide for them as they grow, from feeding and schooling to their everyday needs.

Her example also highlights the pressure that can fall on extended family members when parents frequently need financial help to care for their children. While relatives may be willing to assist, depending on others for regular support can become challenging for both the family seeking help and those providing it.

Having children is a personal decision, and financial circumstances can change after a family has been established. However, Ms. DSF believes people should carefully assess their situation before deciding to have more children.

Her position is that planning for parenthood involves more than wanting a family; it also requires considering the resources needed to raise children and provide them with a reasonable level of care.

Ultimately, she argues that prospective parents should take their financial capacity seriously before bringing children into the world, rather than leaving themselves and their families struggling to meet basic needs.
