Late gospel singer Toluwanisings’ father has recalled how his son grew up after losing his mother as a baby, went on to study in Lagos, got married and remained close to his family, particularly his younger half-siblings.
According to his father, Toluwanisings was born in July 1992. He was only six months old when his mother died, leaving her family to make arrangements for his care.
The father said his late wife’s family asked for the child to be released into their care when her remains were brought from Kano. They wanted to have him with them as they dealt with the loss of their daughter.
“When his mom death was brought from Kano, the mother's family then said they should released Toluwanisings to them to used it to console the family, which he was released to his mom's family, but the father said they were still taking responsibility,” he said.
Although Toluwanisings went to live with his maternal relatives, his father said he continued to take responsibility for him.
His mother’s family were Christians, and Toluwanisings grew up in the Christian faith. His father said he was happy with his son’s religious choice because their family included both Christians and Muslims.
“I was happy when he converted to Christian because in our family we have both Christians and Muslims,” he said.
He also remembered the help his elder brother gave Toluwanisings while he was growing up. According to him, the support included money, school fees and a bicycle.
For the family, these contributions were part of the effort to ensure that Toluwanisings had the support he needed after losing his mother at such a young age.
After secondary school, Toluwanisings proceeded to Yaba College of Technology in Lagos. His father said he was living in Kano at the time, while his son continued his life and education in Lagos.
It was there that Toluwanisings met the woman who later became his wife. They were both members of a church choir, and their relationship eventually led to marriage.
“So, he went to Lagos, he met his wife which they were both in choir, so later inform us he wanted to get married,” his father recalled.
His father also spoke about how Toluwanisings came to know his younger half-siblings.
After his mother died, his father married another woman. At some point, Toluwanisings asked to be introduced to the children from that marriage.
His father said he granted the request, and the siblings became close.
“I married another woman, and Toluwanisings asked me to introduce him to his younger siblings. I did, and they have been very close,” he said.
Their relationship grew over time, and Toluwanisings became a source of support for his father and his younger half-siblings.
According to his father, Toluwanisings did what he could to help his family financially. He did not forget his younger siblings and made efforts to support them as they grew up.
“He has really tried for me and his half siblings financially. He really tried,” his father said.
For him, his son’s support was something worth remembering. Despite the different circumstances in which the family members grew up, Toluwanisings maintained a close relationship with them and continued to help where he could.
His father said one of the most memorable things about his son’s final days was a promise he made shortly before his death.
Just a day before he died, Toluwanisings reportedly promised to help establish one of his younger half-siblings.
“Infact, he promised to establish one of his half siblings a day before he died,” his father said.
"I will be happy is buried in the house he built and not burial ground", he added.
The father did not give further details about the plan, but the timing of the promise remains an important part of his account.
It was a promise to help a younger family member move forward, made when Toluwanisings still had plans for his family.
A Family Story That Remains With His Father
Looking back at his son’s life, the father recalled the people who helped raise Toluwanisings, his education, his marriage and the relationships he built with his family.
Losing his mother at six months old meant that he grew up in the care of her relatives, while other members of the family also contributed to his upbringing.
As an adult, he maintained contact with his father and developed a close bond with his younger half-siblings. His father remembers him not only for the financial help he provided but also for the plans he continued to make for the family.
