A Nigerian pastor has urged members of his congregation to stop following VeryDarkMan on Facebook, expressing concern about the effect his comments may be having on people's attitude towards the church.
The pastor made the statement while preaching to his congregation, asking members to block the social media critic and unfollow him. He also accused VDM of influencing people to stay away from church, claiming that some individuals were finding it difficult to attend services because of what he had said.
Addressing his congregation, the pastor said, "VeryDarkMan, all of you need to bl0ck him on Facebook, unfollow that ant!chr!st. A lot of people are now staying at home and finding it difficult to come to church all because of what VDM said”
The pastor's message appeared to be directed at members who regularly watch VeryDarkMan's videos and follow his comments about religious leaders. He seemed concerned that the things people hear online could affect their willingness to attend church and their perception of pastors.
VeryDarkMan, whose real name is Martins Vincent Otse, is known for speaking publicly about issues involving Nigerian celebrities, public figures and religious leaders. His criticism of some pastors has drawn attention, particularly when he questions their teachings, lifestyles and activities.
His comments about religious figures have also brought him into disagreements with people who believe that pastors should not be subjected to the kind of criticism he gives them. Others, however, argue that religious leaders should be open to questions, especially when their actions or public statements raise concerns.
Pastor Arome Osayi is among the religious figures who have featured in discussions involving VeryDarkMan and his criticism of Christian leaders. VDM has also called out other pastors over issues relating to their teachings and conduct. These confrontations have kept the relationship between the online critic and some members of the Christian community tense.
The pastor's latest comments reflect the concerns some church leaders have about the influence of online personalities on their congregations. While he believes members should distance themselves from VDM's content, his statement also brings attention to the wider disagreement over criticism of religious leaders in Nigeria.
