Nedu Wazobia has called on Nigerians to take their voting rights seriously, pointing to the financial struggles many people face as the cost of living continues to put pressure on households across the country.
For many Nigerians, earning a living no longer guarantees a comfortable life. The rising cost of food, transportation, accommodation and other basic necessities has made it increasingly difficult for workers to manage their monthly expenses, especially those earning low salaries.
Nedu drew attention to the situation by questioning how much a person needs to earn every month to survive in the country's current economic climate. He also referenced a report by a financial services firm which reportedly found that only about 2.4 per cent of Nigerian workers earn more than ₦200,000 monthly.
"How much does someone need to earn monthly to survive in Nigeria's current situation? A financial services firm revealed that only about 2.4% of Nigerian workers earn above ₦200,000 monthly. Life is really hard for millions of Nigerians, with rising food and transportation costs, poor healthcare, and insecurity."
The concerns raised in his statement reflect the difficulties many families face when trying to balance their income with everyday expenses. For workers on modest salaries, a significant portion of their earnings can go towards food, transport and rent, leaving little room for savings, emergencies or unexpected medical bills.
Healthcare is another major concern, as the cost of treatment and medication can place additional pressure on households already struggling financially. Insecurity also remains a challenge, affecting people's sense of safety and, in some areas, their ability to work and earn a living.
Against this backdrop, Nedu encouraged Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and make thoughtful decisions when choosing their leaders.
His message puts the focus on the importance of civic participation at a time when economic conditions remain a major concern for many citizens. Decisions made by elected officials can influence policies on employment, wages, healthcare, transportation, security and other issues that directly affect people's daily lives.
Getting a PVC is an important step towards participating in elections, but making an informed choice at the polls also matters. Nigerians can consider candidates' records, policies and plans before deciding who deserves their votes.
As the cost of living continues to dominate conversations about everyday survival, Nedu's message is a reminder for Nigerians to remain involved in the electoral process and take their voting responsibilities seriously.
