There are times when people watch something simply because it makes them laugh. They may not be looking for a deep message, a clever argument or anything particularly intelligent. Sometimes, all they want is something silly enough to take their minds off everything else.
That appears to be the point Tekno was making while talking about the idea of an “Olodo Uprising.”
For the singer, there is no need to measure every form of entertainment by how intellectual it is. He questioned the idea that people must always look for intelligence or sophistication in whatever they watch before it can be considered enjoyable.
“Intellectual no dey work again. Wetin I go do with your intellect? I can watch Carter Efe for hours and just be laughing at him just being goofy because that's interesting. Back in the day wey you dey watch Osuofia and Mr. Ibu, wetin make you been like them? No be the mumu wey dem dey mumu?...”
His example of Carter Efe makes the argument pretty simple. Tekno is saying that he can spend hours watching someone behave in a goofy way and genuinely enjoy it. There does not have to be another layer to the experience. If something is funny, then the laughter itself can be enough.
He also went back to the kind of comedy many Nigerians grew up watching, mentioning Osuofia and Mr. Ibu. Their characters were often built around exaggerated behaviour, confusion and outright foolishness. Yet that was exactly what made people sit down and watch them.
The comparison is interesting because comedy has never really followed one formula. Some people enjoy sharp jokes and clever wordplay, while others would rather watch someone make a complete fool of themselves. Both can get the same reaction: laughter.
That is where Tekno’s point about “intellect” comes in. He is not necessarily saying intelligence has no place in entertainment. Rather, he is questioning why everything people enjoy has to pass an intellectual test.
A person can listen to music without analysing every lyric. Someone can watch a comedy skit without searching for a hidden meaning. Another person can laugh at a ridiculous character simply because the character is ridiculous.
And that has always been part of Nigerian comedy. From the old movies featuring characters such as Osuofia and Mr. Ibu to newer comedians such as Carter Efe, audiences have continued to find humour in exaggerated personalities and absurd situations.
For Tekno, that kind of entertainment remains interesting precisely because it does not take itself too seriously. Sometimes, the person doing the most ridiculous thing in the room is the one keeping everybody entertained.
So when he asks, “Wetin I go do with your intellect?”, his argument comes down to something quite familiar: not everything people watch needs to make them think. Sometimes, people just want to laugh.
