Netflix has secured exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup in Spain and Andorra, marking another major step in the streaming platform’s expansion into live sports.
The company announced the agreement on Tuesday, confirming that it would broadcast all 104 matches of the tournament to viewers in the two territories. The competition will be jointly hosted by Spain, Morocco and Portugal.
Under the agreement, Netflix will provide comprehensive coverage of the tournament, including live matches and programmes before, during and after games. The additional content will be tailored to Spanish audiences, giving supporters more opportunities to follow the competition beyond the action on the pitch.
The streaming platform also outlined plans to make at least one match available free of charge on each matchday in Spain.
Matches involving the Spanish national team will be broadcast free-to-air, while the two semi-finals and the final will also be accessible without a subscription.
Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria described the World Cup as an event capable of bringing people together across countries and generations.
She said the company was excited to deliver the competition to football supporters in Spain and Andorra as Spain prepares to host the tournament.
Bajaria also highlighted Netflix’s growing relationship with FIFA, pointing to its broadcasting agreements for the 2027 and 2031 editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States and Canada.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström welcomed the partnership, describing the 2030 tournament as a special edition of the competition.
He expressed confidence that working with Netflix would help bring the excitement of the World Cup closer to fans and expand access to the event.
The agreement reflects Netflix’s increasing investment in live sports, as streaming services seek to attract larger audiences through major international competitions.
Although the platform initially built its reputation around films, television series and documentaries, it has gradually expanded into live sporting events.
Football is not the only area where Netflix is strengthening its presence. The company has also secured exclusive global broadcasting rights for a scheduled December 11 boxing contest between British heavyweight stars Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.
The planned fight adds to Netflix’s growing portfolio of high-profile sporting events and demonstrates its interest in reaching audiences beyond traditional entertainment programming.
The 2030 World Cup agreement could prove particularly significant because of the tournament’s global popularity and Spain’s role as one of its host nations.
By combining live coverage with free-to-air matches, Netflix is seeking to make the competition accessible to a broad audience while strengthening its position in sports broadcasting.
The deal further signals the growing competition between streaming platforms and traditional broadcasters for the rights to major sporting events, with the World Cup expected to remain one of football’s biggest global attractions.
