Nigerian skit maker Kevin Arua, popularly known as Kevinblak and recognised for his Governor Amuneke character, has spoken about the threats he has received over his political skits.

Kevinblak discussed the issue during an interview on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Mind, where he spoke about using comedy to address governance and other issues in the country.

While political satire has become a major part of his content, the comedian said it has also come with its own challenges. According to him, some people have taken offence at the issues raised in his skits, leading to threats against him.

He said:

“I have gotten countless threats because of my contents criticising bad governance. Well, it’s a journey I knew the implication before I started so what that’s going to happen should happen. I once received a message from someone, saying he knows my house and they would come after me.”

Kevinblak said he was not unaware of the possible consequences when he decided to make content around politics and governance. For him, speaking about issues he believes deserve attention has always been part of the reason behind his political comedy.

The content creator has built a recognisable character around Governor Amuneke, using the fictional governor to poke fun at situations involving leadership and public affairs. His skits often take familiar political situations and turn them into comedy, giving viewers a lighter way to look at serious subjects.

However, Kevinblak's experience shows that political comedy can sometimes attract reactions that go beyond criticism of the content itself. The threats he described included a message from someone who claimed to know where he lived and threatened to come after him.

Despite this, he has not indicated that he plans to abandon the political side of his comedy. Instead, he appears to see the backlash as one of the risks that came with choosing governance as a subject.

For Kevinblak, the Governor Amuneke character is more than just another comedy role. It gives him a way to address political issues while staying within the style of entertainment that his audience knows him for.

Speaking about the threats also gave him an opportunity to explain what comes with making this kind of content. While comedy is usually associated with entertainment and laughter, political satire can touch on sensitive subjects, particularly when it mirrors real-life situations involving leaders and governance.

Kevinblak's comments underline the difficult balance entertainers can face when they use humour to discuss serious public issues. In his case, the threats have become another part of the challenges that have come with his decision to make governance a regular subject of his skits.
