Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has opened up about his personal life, health challenges and decades-long journey in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, revealing that he has lost three wives.
The actor made the disclosure during an interview with actress and media personality Biola Bayo, where he reflected on some of the experiences that have shaped his life away from the screen.
Kosoko revealed that one of his wives died during childbirth while giving birth to Bidemi Kosoko, who later followed in her father’s footsteps to become an actress.
Speaking about the loss, the veteran actor said, “I lost my wife through childbirth; that’s Bidemi’s mother. I have lost three wives.”
The revelation offered an insight into the personal challenges Kosoko has faced over the years despite his long and successful career in the entertainment industry.
The actor also spoke about parenting and advised parents to treat all their children equally, stressing the importance of making every child feel valued within the family.
According to Kosoko, parents should avoid creating differences among their children or making one child feel more important than another.
“Treat your children equally; let them know they’re equal in your mind,” he advised.
His comment highlighted his view that children should grow up knowing that they have an equal place in their parents’ hearts and minds.
Kosoko Speaks On Living With Diabetes
Kosoko also opened up about his health, revealing that he has been living with diabetes since 1996.
The actor said his lengthy experience of managing the condition has given him a deep understanding of his own health and what his body requires.
“I became diabetic in 1996; I understand my health better than some doctors do,” he said.
His disclosure means he has spent decades managing the condition while continuing to work in an industry that has demanded a significant amount of his time and energy.
Despite the health challenge, Kosoko has remained active in the entertainment industry, where he has built a career spanning several decades.
Actor Recalls Beginning Career At 10
Reflecting on his career, Kosoko traced his involvement in theatre back to childhood. He said he began theatre at the age of 10 in 1964, before establishing his own theatre group eight years later.
“I started theatre at age 10, in 1964, and formed my own group in 1972.
“I can confidently say that I am one of the pioneers of this industry,” he said.
His account places his career within the early development of Nigeria’s organised entertainment and theatre scene. From his beginnings as a child performer, Kosoko went on to establish his own group and eventually became one of the recognisable figures in Nollywood.
Over the years, he has remained involved in acting and has witnessed major changes in the way entertainment is produced, promoted and consumed.
Jide Kosoko On Social Media
The veteran actor also discussed the emergence of social media and how it has changed the entertainment industry.
According to Kosoko, practitioners initially approached social media with some level of apprehension, but many have since discovered ways to use the platform to promote their work and connect with audiences.
“When social media was coming, we were afraid. But now, we’re using it to our advantage. Some use it to make a mockery of themselves.
“Must you shake your bumbum and talk about that jargon?” he questioned.
Kosoko’s remarks reflected his mixed view of the platform. While acknowledging its usefulness as a promotional tool, he also criticised some of the content entertainers put online.
For the veteran actor, social media has become an important part of the entertainment business, even though he believes practitioners should be mindful of how they present themselves to the public.
His comments during the interview provided a glimpse into both his private experiences and professional journey, from losing three wives and managing diabetes to starting theatre as a child and witnessing the transformation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
