Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has spoken about his relationship with Nigeria’s political leaders, saying his age and experience allow him to address them as an elder.

The actor, who will turn 80 in approximately six months, made the remarks while recounting how he once appealed to the government to provide financial assistance to an ailing colleague.

Pete Edochie explained that he used an interview conducted at his residence in Enugu to draw attention to his colleague’s health challenges and urge the authorities to intervene.

According to him, the appeal received a positive response, with the government reportedly sending N500,000 to the sick actor the following week.

Recounting the experience, he also reflected on his age and how it influences his interactions with political officeholders.

“In the next six months I’ll be turning 80. I’m older than all the governors and president, so when I talk to them, it’s like a father talking to a son,” he said.

The veteran actor’s comments reflect his belief that age and life experience provide him with the confidence to engage political leaders directly.

He did not identify the colleague who received the financial assistance, but his account highlighted his efforts to use his public platform to seek help for someone facing health challenges.

His intervention also underscored the potential influence of established figures in the entertainment industry, particularly when advocating for colleagues who require support during difficult periods.

Pete Edochie remains one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors, having built a reputation through decades of performances in Nigerian films. His distinctive delivery and portrayals of authoritative characters have earned him a lasting place in the country’s film industry.

Beyond his acting career, he has remained a prominent public figure whose comments on social and national issues frequently attract attention.

As he approaches his 80th birthday, his remarks offer another glimpse into how he views his position as an elder in Nigerian society.

By comparing his relationship with the country’s political leaders to that between a father and his son, Pete Edochie emphasised the importance he attaches to age, respect and experience.

His account of the government’s response to his appeal also illustrated how he believes public advocacy can help people in need.

The actor’s statement about being older than the president and state governors formed the central message of his comments, as he presented himself as an elder who can speak to those in positions of authority with the confidence that comes from his years of experience.
