Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has met with Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, to discuss ways the creative industry can contribute to improving relations between the Nigeria Police Force and the public.
The meeting took place at the Police House in Lagos on Saturday as part of efforts by the police leadership to engage influential figures and sectors outside traditional security structures.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the influence of entertainers, particularly among young Nigerians, and how that reach could be channelled towards encouraging better understanding between citizens and law enforcement officers.
Creative Industry’s Influence
Disu highlighted the significant role played by the creative sector in shaping conversations among young Nigerians.
According to him, entertainers have a strong connection with the younger generation and can use their platforms to encourage constructive discussions around policing, community relations and the relationship between security agencies and citizens.
The IGP said engaging people with influence in the entertainment industry formed part of his administration’s wider approach to addressing concerns surrounding the police and improving the institution’s relationship with the public.
He noted that collaboration with stakeholders from different sectors could help create a better understanding between police officers and the communities they serve.
The engagement also reflects the police leadership’s interest in exploring partnerships beyond conventional security institutions as it seeks to strengthen public confidence.
Burna Boy Supports Initiative
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, expressed support for the initiative during the meeting.
The singer indicated his willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at improving relations between Nigerians and the police, particularly among young people.
His involvement in the conversation provides an opportunity for the police to connect with a section of the population that frequently interacts with entertainment and popular culture.
For the police, working with prominent voices in the creative industry could provide another channel for communicating with citizens and creating conversations around issues affecting communities.
The meeting also underlined the potential role of entertainers in discussions that extend beyond music and entertainment.
Building Better Police-Public Relations
Improving relations between law enforcement agencies and citizens remains an important aspect of public policing.
The engagement between Disu and Burna Boy centred on how communication, influence and collaboration could contribute to that objective.
The IGP said influential voices could help bridge gaps between officers and members of the public by promoting greater understanding of the responsibilities and challenges on both sides.
For the police, such engagements could provide opportunities to listen to concerns from outside the institution while also explaining efforts being made to improve interaction with communities.
The creative industry, meanwhile, has access to large audiences through music, film, social media and other forms of entertainment. This reach gives its leading figures the ability to influence conversations and bring attention to issues affecting society.
Focus On Young Nigerians
A significant part of the discussions was the relationship between the creative industry and young Nigerians.
With entertainers such as Burna Boy commanding large followings, their involvement in conversations around social issues can help bring such discussions to audiences that may not ordinarily engage directly with security institutions.
Disu’s engagement with the singer therefore forms part of the police administration’s efforts to explore different approaches to improving public interaction with the force.
Burna Boy’s willingness to support the initiative could also create room for further conversations between entertainers, young Nigerians and law enforcement authorities.
Wider Stakeholder Engagement
The meeting comes as the police continue to seek partnerships with stakeholders across different sectors of society.
The objective is to encourage collaboration and create avenues through which concerns about policing can be discussed beyond the traditional relationship between security agencies and the communities they serve.
For Disu, engaging influential personalities in the entertainment sector represents one way of expanding that conversation.
The meeting with Burna Boy also highlights the growing recognition of the creative industry’s influence in shaping public conversations, particularly among young Nigerians.
As the police continue to pursue efforts aimed at strengthening public confidence, collaboration with influential figures could provide additional platforms for dialogue and engagement.
The discussions between Disu and Burna Boy therefore centred on the possibility of using the reach of the creative industry to promote better communication, understanding and interaction between the police and the Nigerian public.
