Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde following a public display of physical agility that has sparked discussions about age, stamina and leadership ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Igboho expressed displeasure over what he interpreted as an attempt to ridicule President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that political disagreements should not be turned into opportunities to disrespect an older leader.

The activist’s reaction followed Makinde’s appearance at a South-West town hall meeting in Akure, Ondo State, where the governor jumped down from a stage to demonstrate his physical ability. The gesture attracted attention amid growing conversations about the qualities Nigerians should consider when choosing their next president.

Reacting in a video circulating online, Igboho strongly condemned Makinde’s conduct, accusing the governor of using the demonstration to make an indirect statement about Tinubu’s physical capacity.

The activist did not hide his position, declaring:

“If you insult Tinubu, I will insult you back.”

He also criticised the governor in unusually blunt terms, saying:

“He was jumping around like a frog and a m@d man, insulting Tinubu, saying Tinubu can’t jump like him, as if he doesn’t have a father.”

Igboho further emphasised the importance of respecting older people, suggesting that public figures should exercise restraint when making statements or demonstrations that could be interpreted as ridicule. He also described Makinde as a disgrace over the incident.

Why Makinde’s Stage Jump Drew Attention

The incident took place during a political gathering in Akure, where Makinde sought to make a point about the physical demands of occupying Nigeria’s highest political office.

The governor argued that presidential contenders should not be judged by age alone but should also demonstrate the energy required to carry out the responsibilities of leadership.

As part of his argument, Makinde challenged other presidential hopefuls to replicate his physical demonstration, saying: “If they can do that, vote for them.”

Although Tinubu was not mentioned by name during the demonstration, some observers interpreted Makinde’s actions as an indirect reference to the President, particularly given the discussions surrounding age and physical stamina in the lead-up to the next presidential election.

That interpretation appears to be central to Igboho’s reaction. The activist viewed the demonstration as disrespectful to Tinubu, while Makinde’s stated argument focused on evaluating presidential candidates according to their energy and physical ability.

Igboho’s Reaction Adds to Political Debate

The exchange has brought renewed attention to the relationship between public criticism, political rivalry and respect for elderly leaders.

Igboho’s remarks underscore his objection to what he perceives as mockery directed at Tinubu. His warning also signals his readiness to respond verbally to anyone he believes has crossed the line in criticising the President.

However, Makinde did not explicitly identify Tinubu as the target of his demonstration, meaning the insinuation that the governor was mocking the President remains an interpretation of the event rather than a direct statement by Makinde.

With attention increasingly turning towards the 2027 election, the incident has added another talking point to discussions about presidential leadership, physical stamina and the conduct of political figures.
