Nigerian media entrepreneur Mo Abudu has said she will not allow romantic relationships to determine her happiness at 62, stressing that any tears she sheds would be over her professional life rather than heartbreak.
She made this known during an appearance on the Toke Moments podcast hosted by media personality Toke Makinwa, where she discussed relationships, self-worth, rejection and her approach to life.
The EbonyLife Media founder, who celebrated her 62nd birthday on September 11, said she no longer believes a romantic relationship should have the power to leave her emotionally devastated.
She explained that while her work could sometimes bring her to tears, she would not allow a man to put her in such a position.
Abudu also advised women to recognise when a relationship is no longer working instead of trying to convince a man to remain with them against his wishes.
She maintained that genuine interest should be evident in a relationship, adding that women should not continue investing their emotions in partners who have shown that they are no longer interested.
The media executive warned against sacrificing personal dignity to keep a relationship alive, urging women not to lower their standards because they are afraid of losing a partner.
She encouraged women to pay attention to their partners' actions rather than excuses, particularly when someone becomes distant, stops communicating regularly or repeatedly claims to be too busy.
According to her, women should be willing to walk away from relationships where their feelings and commitment are not reciprocated instead of remaining in situations that leave them feeling unwanted.
She further cautioned against tolerating dishonesty and unfaithfulness in the hope that a partner would eventually change, emphasising the importance of recognising when it is time to move on.
Speaking about her preferences in choosing a partner, Abudu said she favours men around her age or older who have achieved substantial success in their respective fields.
She explained that she wants a partner who has established himself rather than someone whose circumstances could make the relationship feel like an additional responsibility.
Her comments reflect her emphasis on independence and the importance of maintaining self-respect when navigating romantic relationships.
Beyond her views on love and relationships, Abudu has continued to expand her career and business interests over the years.
She began her television career at 40 with Moments with Mo, which helped establish her as a prominent figure in African media.
At 50, she ventured into filmmaking, building EbonyLife into an entertainment brand known for its film and television productions.
At 55, she launched EbonyLife Place in Lagos, extending her business interests into hospitality and entertainment experiences.
She is currently expanding the brand's international presence with an EbonyLife Place location in London, further demonstrating her ambition to grow her business beyond Nigeria.
During the conversation with Makinwa, Abudu also discussed her approach to rejection and her decision to move on from hosting Moments with Mo.
Her message to women was clear: they should recognise their worth, accept when relationships have run their course and avoid compromising their dignity to win another person's affection.
